What is the Tridentine Mass?

It's the Mass used in the Catholic Church for almost 1500 years, until the introduction of the "New Mass" of  Paul VI following the Second Vatican Council.

Why is it called the Tridentine Mass?

Because it was codified by the Council of Trent in the 16th century. But the Mass itself is far older than that. The Canon, or central part, of the Mass dates back to the time of St Gregory in the sixth century where he made it official, but it can be found even earlier in the writings and practices of Saint Ambrose and Saint Antony the Great in the third century.

In 1570, Pope St Pius V - in his Papal Bull Quo Primum - said that priests could use the Tridentine rite forever, "without scruple of conscience or fear of penalty".

Wasn't the Tridentine Mass banned?

No, but following the Second Vatican Council, its public use was (unjustly) suppressed by most Paul VI and the Bishops.

After the introduction of  Paul VI's new Mass, the only priests given permission to say the Tridentine Mass publicly were priests of England and Wales, thanks to an indult (or permission) granted by the Vatican to Cardinal Heenan of Westminster.

Other priests - such as Padre Pio- continued to use the old Mass privately instead of the new rite.

After a thorough review of the teachings of the Catholic Church, this Mass could never be revoked and it is impossible to say that the perfect Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is a bad thing or needs to revamped. Never listen to those, even Bishops and "Popes", who tell you to do less for God. By going to the invalid Novus Ordo Mass, you are turning your back on the true sacrifice on Calvary, since the New Mass is directly connected to the wishes of the reformers (Protestant) of the Reformation and Freemasons. Do not believe those who try to tell you it is "just going back to its original form". That is like saying you can plant a seed, watch the tree grow, and then cut it down and ignore all the fruits through the centuries. Furthermore, this way of thinking is against Church teaching and has been previously condemned. Pope Saint Pius V warned us and made it clear that the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass could never change.     Upon our elevation to the Apostolic throne We gladly turned Our mind and energies, and directed all Our thoughts, to the matter of preserving incorrupt the public worship of the Church; and We have striven, with God’s help, by every means in Our power to achieve that purpose.

    Whereas amongst other decrees of the Holy Council of Trent We were charged with revision and re-issue of the sacred books, to wit the Catechism, the Missal and the Breviary; and whereas We have with God’s consent published a Catechism for the instruction of the faithful, and thoroughly revised the Breviary for the due performance of the Divine Office, We next, in order that Missal and Breviary might be in perfect harmony, as is right and proper (considering that it is altogether fitting that there should be in the Church only one appropriate manner of Psalmody and one sole rite of celebrating Mass), deemed it necessary to give Our immediate attention to what still remained to be done, namely the re-editing of the Missal with the least possible delay.

    We resolved accordingly to delegate this task to a select committee of scholars; and they, having at every stage of their work and with the utmost care collated the ancient codices in Our Vatican Library and reliable (original or amended) codices from elsewhere, and having also consulted the writing of ancient and approved authors who have bequeathed to us records relating to the said sacred rites, thus restored the Missal itself to the pristine form and rite of the holy Fathers. When this production had been subjected to close scrutiny and further amended We, after mature consideration, ordered that the final result be forthwith printed and published in Rome, so that all may enjoy the fruits of this labor: that priests may know what prayers to use, and what rites and ceremonies they are to use henceforward in the celebration of Masses.

    Now therefore, in order that all everywhere may adopt and observe what has been delivered to them by the Holy Roman Church, Mother and Mistress of the other churches, it shall be unlawful henceforth and forever throughout the Christian world to sing or to read Masses according to any formula other than that of this Missal published by Us; this ordinance to apply to all churches and chapels, with or without care of souls, patriarchal, collegiate and parochial, be they secular or belonging to any religious Order whether of men (including the military Orders) or of women, in which conventual Masses are or ought to be sung aloud in choir or read privately according to the rites and customs of the Roman Church; to apply moreover even if the said churches have been in any way exempted, whether by indult of the Apostolic See, by custom, by privilege, or even by oath or Apostolic confirmation, or have their rights and faculties guaranteed to them in any other way whatsoever; saving only those in which the practice of saying Mass differently was granted over two hundred years ago simultaneously with the Apostolic See’s institution and confirmation of the church, and those in which there has prevailed a similar custom followed continuously for a period of not less than two hundred years; in which cases We in no wise rescind their prerogatives or customs aforesaid. Nevertheless, if this Missal which We have seen fit to publish be more agreeable to these last, We hereby permit them to celebrate Mass according to this rite, subject to the consent of their bishop or prelate, and of their whole Chapter, all else to the contrary notwithstanding. All other churches aforesaid are hereby denied the use of other missals, which are to be wholly and entirely rejected; and by this present Constitution, which shall have the force of law in perpetuity, We order and enjoin under pain of Our displeasure that nothing be added to Our newly published Missal, nothing omitted therefrom, and nothing whatsoever altered there in.

    We specifically command each and every patriarch, administrator and all other persons of whatsoever ecclesiastical dignity, be they even Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, or, possessed of any other rank or pre-eminence, and We order them by virtue of holy obedience to sing or to read the Mass according to the rite and manner and norm herein laid down by Us, and henceforward to discontinue and utterly discard all other rubrics and rites of other missals, howsoever ancient, which they have been accustomed to follow, and not to presume in celebrating Mass to introduce any ceremonies or recite any prayers other than those contained in this Missal.

    Furthermore, by these presents and by virtue of Our Apostolic authority, We give and grant in perpetuity that for the singing or reading of Mass in any church whatsoever this Missal may be followed absolutely, without any scruple of conscience or fear of incurring any penalty, judgment or censure, and may be freely and lawfully used. Nor shall bishops, administrators, canons, chaplains and other secular priests, or religious of whatsoever Order or by whatsoever title designated, be obliged to celebrate Mass otherwise than enjoined by Us. We likewise order and declare that no one whosoever shall be forced or coerced into altering this Missal; and this present Constitution can never be revoked or modified, but shall forever remain valid and have the force of law, notwithstanding previous constitutions or edicts of provincial or synodal councils, and notwithstanding the usage of the churches aforesaid established by very long and even immemorial prescription, saving only usage of more than two hundred years.

    Consequently it is Our will, and by the same authority We decree, that one month after publication of this Our Constitution and Missal, priests of the Roman Curia shall be obliged to sing or to read the Mass in accordance therewith; others south of the Alps, after three months; those who live beyond the Alps, after six months or as soon as the Missal becomes available for purchase.

    Furthermore, in order that the said Missal may be preserved incorrupt and kept free from defects and errors, the penalty for nonobservance in the case of all printers resident in territory directly or indirectly subject to Ourselves and the Holy Roman Church shall be forfeiture of their books and a fine of 100 gold ducats payable ipso facto to the Apostolic Treasury. In the case of those resident in other parts of the world it shall be excommunication latae sententiae and all other penalties at Our discretion; and by Our Apostolic authority and the tenor of these presents. We also decree that they must not dare or presume either to print or to publish or to sell, or in any way to take delivery of such books without Our approval and consent, or without express permission of the Apostolic Commissary in the said parts appointed by us for that purpose. Each of the said printers must receive from the aforementioned Commissary a standard Missal to serve as an exemplar for subsequent copies, which, when made, must be compared with the exemplar and agree faithfully therewith, varying in no wise from the first impression printed in Rome.

    But, since it would be difficult for this present Constitution to be transmitted to all parts of the world and to come to the notice of all concerned simultaneously, We direct that it be, as usual, posted and published at the doors of the Basilica of the Prince of the Apostles, at those of the Apostolic Chancery, and at the end of the Campo de’Fiori; moreover We direct that printed copies of the same, signed by a notary public and authenticated with the seal of an ecclesiastical dignitary, shall possess the same unqualified and indubitable validity everywhere and in every country that would attend the display there of Our present text. Accordingly, no one whosoever is permitted to infringe or rashly contravene this notice of Our permission, statute, ordinance, command, direction, grant, indult, declaration, will, decree and prohibition. Should any person venture to do so, let him understand that he will incur the wrath of Almighty God and of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul.

What's the advantage of the Tridentine Mass?

The validity of the Tridentine Mass is shown, not only by the Papal Bull, but also its uniformity and experiencing the words of the Holy Ghost. Wherever Catholics go in the world, the Tridentine Mass is exactly the same. The movements and gestures of the Mass are clearly prescribed and each have a purpose, so there's no room for "personalization and innovations" and other abuses of the liturgy. And the time-honored Latin and Prayers of the Mass reverently reflects the sacrificial nature of the celebration and the inspiration of the Holy Ghost. This Mass expresses the Dogmas such as Purgatory and Blessed Mother, as well, there is no doubt that something heavenly is happening.

So are Catholics entitled to attend a Tridentine Mass if they wish?

Absolutely!  This question was added for those of you who are nervous of going against a Bishop, and rightly so. Many members of our community went through similar experiences and were afraid that they themselves were outside the Church. As we prayed and studied more, we started to learn the truth and stood up for the faith, the problems with the new mass and the new sacraments  are simply too overwhelming to list here on this website page. Simply ask yourself, how could the Mass that all the great saints attended be now a bad thing? As well you must come to terms with the fruits of the New Mass, for example, no reverence or modesty, no unity, liturgical abuses, ill informed priest, and empty pews. Judge it by the fruits, this Mass was not written by the Holy Ghost. You do not have to wait for a Bishop to "allow" a Tridentine Mass to be said in your diocese. Unfortunately we must fight and seek the Truth, even if that means going to a small chapel where the Tridentine Mass is offered. We certainly do not approve or advocate disobedience, but only advocate obedience to Divine Law and true Popes and Bishops. You must choose God over ill informed or evil men. Obedience to God and the teachings of His Holy Catholic Church come first. For instance, if you know a priest that says that Blessed Mother was not the Immaculate Conception, he would be denying a Dogma of the Catholic Church, therefore making him a heretic. You would not listen and follow this priest, in fact it is your responsibility to inform him otherwise. The truth is, many priest do not believe that Blessed Mother was the Immaculate Conception, and it gets much worse than that. The present authority of the Catholic Church is overwhelmingly corrupted by heresy and therefore the men who support these errors in Holy Mother Church do not hold any authority. The Devil is trying his best to destroy the One True Faith.

**Please investigate each place you go to for Mass. There are traditionalist, many with good intentions, that think they can be ordained by anyone and be a priest. Also please stay away from Traditional groups that have completely gone too far,. For instance, groups that have "elected" their own pope.

Lastly, it is very important to know that your priest should be validly ordained in the traditional rite. The reason for this is because the New Church has changed the consecration formula of Bishops in the late 60's . On November 13, 1947, Pope Pius XII had given us a specific form of consecration for validity in his encyclical Sacramentum Ordinis. This consecration has been used for centuries and has always had the essential words. Pope Pius XII  said the words in the consecration were absolutely needed for validity. The only word in the new consecration that remains the same as in the old is the word "and". The bishops that were ordained by this new consecration are in fact invalid (Roman Rite), therefore not making them priests. We realize that this is a lot to digest, but if you want valid sacraments you must find a priest that does the traditional rites and is validly ordained by a valid Bishop. Our Holy Mother Church is in a great spiritual war. We must continue to pray the rosary and read the teachings of the Doctors, saints and theologians of the pre-Vatican II era. THE ORDINARY OF THE MASS

On coming to the altar the priest unfolds the corporal and prepares the chalice by pouring in wine and water.  When presenting the water, the server says:

S.  Benedicite. S.  Bless.

The priest blesses the water with the formula:

P.  In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti.
 

S.  Amen.

P.  In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.

S.  Amen.

This blessing is not given in Masses for the Dead.  At a sung Mass (Missa Cantata) the priest does not uncover the chalice until the Responsory.  At a Solemn Mass the chalice is carried by the subdeacon to the priest who is seated on the Epistle side of the altar.

A. MASS OF THE CATECHUMENS
This part of the Mass is so called because the public penitents and catechumens were allowed to be present at it.

1. PREPARATION.

The priest says in a low voice:

Then the priest descends to the foot of the altar, makes a profound inclination, and begins with the sign of the cross:

The Gloria is omitted during Advent, from Septuagesima to Holy Saturday exclusively (except on Maundy Thursday), on Ferial days and in Masses for the Dead.

2.  INSTRUCTION. 

The priest turns to the people, and says:

He then reads the Collect.

At the end of the Collect the server answers: Amen.

Then follow the Epistle and the Responsory, after which, going to the Gospel side of altar he says in a low voice:

P.  Dominus sit in corde meo et in labiis meis ad pronuntiandum sanctum evangelium pacis. P.  May the Lord be in my heart and on my lips, that I may announce the gospel of peace.

He begins the Gospel by saying:

While saying this he signs himself with the thumb on forehead, lips and heart, and then blesses himself with the ordinary sign of the cross.  The faithful sign themselves in the same way as the priest.

After the Gospel the priest first blesses himself in the ordinary way, and then the missal: after which he kisses the book, saying:

The priest now begins the Creed (if the rubric orders it) in the middle of the altar, continuing it at the missal:

I believe in one God, the Father, almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.  And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages; God of God, light of light, true God of true God; begotten not made; consubstantial with the Father: by whom all things were made.  Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven (here all kneel); and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost, of the virgin Mary: AND WAS MADE MAN.  He was crucified also for us, suffered under Pontius Pilate, and was buried.  And the third day he rose again according to the scriptures; and ascended into heaven.  He sitteth at the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead: and his kingdom shall have no end.  And in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son.  Who together with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified; who spoke by the prophets.  And one holy catholic and apostolic church.  I confess one baptism for the remission of sins.  And I await the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

While offering the chalice he says:

In Solemn Masses the incense is used here.

He now washes his fingers, saying at the same time:

Lavabo inter innocentes manus meas, et circumdabo altare tuum Domine: ut audiam vocem laudis, et enarrem universa mirabilia tua.  Domine dilexi decorem domus tuae, et locum habitationis gloriae tuae. I will wash my hands among the innocent, and will compass thine altar, O Lord, that I may hear the voice of thy praise, and tell of all thy wondrous works.  I have loved, O Lord the beauty of thy house, and the place where thy glory dwelleth.

Bowing down in the middle of the altar he says:

In spiritu humilitatis, et in animo contrito, suscipiamur Domine a te: et sic fiat sacrificium nostrum, ut a te suscipiatur hodie, et placeat tibi Domine Deus. In humble Spirit and with a contrite heart may we be received by thee, O Lord: and may our sacrifice be so performed that it be received by thee this day, and be pleasing to thee, O Lord God.

He turns to the people inviting them to unite themselves with him in the mass:

Orate fratres, ut meum ac vestrum pariter in conspectu Domini sit acceptum sacrificium. Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be pleasing in the sight of the Lord.

Turning back to the altar he says:

Domine exaudi orationem meam: et clamor meus ad te veniat. O Lord hear my prayer: and let my cry come unto thee.

After the Secret prayers he says aloud:

It is said on Feasts of B. V. Haec sacrosancta commixtio corporis et sanguinis Domini nostri Jesu Christi fiat mihi, et omnibus sumentibus, salus mentis et corporis; et ad vitam aeternam promerendam atque capessendam praeparatio salutaris. May this most sacred commingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ be to me and to all who receive it, health of mind and body; and a salutary preparation for meriting and obtaining eternal life. Bowing down he says:

Domine Jesu Christe Fili Dei vivi, qui ex voluntate Patris, cooperante Spiritu Sancto, per mortem tuam mundum vivificasti: libera me per hoc sacrosanctum corpus et sanguinem tuum ab omnibus iniquitatibus meis, et universis malis; et fac me tuis semper inhaerere mandatis, et a te nunquam separari permittas: Qui cum eodem Deo Patre et Spiritu Sancto vivis et regnas Deus in saecula saeculorum.  Amen. O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who according to the will of the Father, through the co-operation of the Holy Ghost, hast by thy death given life to the world: deliver me by this, thy most holy Body and Blood from all my iniquities and from all evils, and make me ever cling to thy command, and never suffer me to be separated from thee: Who with the same God the Father and the Holy Ghost livest and reignest God for ever and ever.  Amen.

Receiving the Body and Blood the priest says:

Corpus et sanguis Domini nostri Jesu Christi custodiat me in vitam aeternam.  Amen. May the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ keep me unto eternal life.  Amen.

After the priest has received the Precious Blood the server recites theConfiteor for those who wish to receive Communion.  The priest gives the Absolution, and then lifting the sacred host says:

Ecce Agnus Dei: ecce qui tollit peccata mundi. Behold the Lamb of God: behold him who taketh away the sins of the world.

Then he says three times:

Domine non sum dignus ut intres sub tectum meum, sed tantum dic verbo et sanabitur anima mea. Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof: say but the word and my soul shall he healed.

Then he communicates the faithful saying:

Corpus Domini nostri Jesu Christi custodiat te in vitam aeternam.  Amen. May the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ keep thee unto eternal life.  Amen.

He then washes his fingers saying:

Quod ore sumpsimus, Domine, pura mente capiamus; ut de corpore et sanguine Domini nostri Jesu Christi fiat nobis remedium sempiternum.  Amen. May we house in a pure heart, O Lord, what we have received with our lips; so that of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ there may be made for us an everlasting healing.  Amen.

When the priest has purified and covered the chalice, he reads the Communion Antiphon, and then salutes the people.

P. The Lord be with you.

S.  And with thy spirit.

Then he reads the Postcommunion, to which the server replies: Amen.

The priest then kisses the altar, and turning to the people gives them his blessing:

May the blessing of almighty God, Father, the Son, and Holy Ghost descend upon you and remain with you always.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God: the same was in the beginning with God.  All things were made by him, and without him was made nothing that was made.  In him was life, and the life was the light of men; and the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.  This man came for a witness to give testimony of the light, that all men might believe through Him.  He was not the light, but was to give testimony of the light.  That was the true light which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world.  He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.  He came unto his own, and his own received him not.  But as many as received him, he gave them power to become the sons of God: to them that believe in his name, who are born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.  (Here kneel down. ) AND THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH and dwelt among us: and we saw his glory, the glory as it were of the Only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

In England the following prayers are said for the King after High Mass on Sundays:

Domine, salvum fac regem nostrum N. ; et exaudi nos in die qua invocaverimus te.  Gloria Patri.

Quaesumus, omnipotens Deus, ut famulus tuus, N. , Rex noster, qui tua miseratione suscepit regni gubernacula virtutum etiam omnium percipiat incrementum: quibus decenter ornatus, et vitiorum monstra devitare (tempore belli: hostes superare), et ad te, qui via, veritas et vita es, cum regina consorte et prole regia, gratiosus valeat pervenire.  Per Christum Dominum nostrum.  Amen.

O Lord, save N. , our king; and hear us in the day that we shall call upon thee.  Glory be. 

LET US PRAY.

We beseech thee, almighty God, that thy servant N. , our king, who in thy merciful providence has been called to rule over this kingdom, may also receive from thee an increase of all virtues: thus becomingly adorned may he avoid all evil doing (in time of war: overcome his enemies), and by thy grace attain, together with the queen consort and their royal offspring, to thee, who art the way, the truth and the life.  Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

PRAYERS TO BE SAID AFTER LOW MASS

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum; benedicta tu in mulieribus et benedictus fructus ventris tui Jesus.  Sancta Maria, mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus nunc et in hora mortis nostrae.  Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.  Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.

This is repeated a second and a third time.
